THE ALASKA RIDE CREW
The Alaska Ride is a fully
supported event for all participants. This support
includes all meals, lodging, showers, gear transport
and much more. Each day scores of volunteer
crew members leave in the early morning hours
to set up rest stops; mark the route with signage,
advance to the next camp site to set up equipment
and facilities. More than 30 teams of volunteer
crew work from the early morning hours until
late evening after cyclists have gone to sleep
in order to provide for every detail of the
weeks experience. Crew members are required
to register in advance and must commit to the
entire event. A complete list of crew teams
is below.
ADVANCE TEAMS:
Advance Set-Up: This team
travels one day ahead of participants, setting
up the camp one day in advance of the Riders’
arrival. Sets up sleeping tent sections, all
tables and chairs in dining area and service
tents.
Advance Route Marking: Responsibilities are
to mark the next day’s route each day
allowing the cyclists to follow route marking
to find their way along the day’s route.
CAMP
BASED TEAMS:
Bike Parking: Responsible
for setting up and managing the bike parking
area in camp. Responsibilities include checking
in each rider as they enter camp each evening
and checking them out upon the morning departure.
This team also assists with any bike transport
concerns arising from medical or other issues.
Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
Information Tent: The Information
Tent is a tent where participants go for any
details they might need regarding camp set-up,
route questions, messages or to meet visitors.
This team checks all visitors in and out of
camp, manages Lost & Found, and directs
people to various camp activities. This team
also manages the lunch distribution for the
camp based Crew teams. Must be able to lift
20 lbs.
Security: Handles overnight security, focusing
on the perimeter areas of camp, as well as securing
the Bike Parking area each night. Works closely
with overnight staff and security that might
be available. Must be able to lift 35 lbs.
Traffic: Responsible for
managing vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic
into and out of camp. Checks in all vehicles
permitted on-site with the event. Enforces parking
plans established by the Logistics Team. This
team spends long hours standing and directing
traffic.
Gear & Tent: Manages
the collection and distribution of all participant
gear and tents throughout the event. Team will
load all gear into trucks each morning, then
off-load gear in the assigned area each afternoon.
Assists participants in locating their personal
gear. Must be able to lift 60+ lbs gear bags.
Gear & Tent also drive 24’ trucks
from camp to camp.
Camp Water & Ice: Responsible
for distribution of water and ice throughout
camp as needed. This team is required to lift
gallons of water and bags of ice throughout
each day.
Pack-Up: Manages the clean
up of camp each day, including the monitoring
of trash throughout the campsite. Each morning,
as crew teams depart, this team ensures that
all elements of camp are completely cleaned
up, and that the site is as clean as or cleaner
than when the event arrived on site.
Taxi: Works primarily with
staff and medical team, providing non- emergency
transportation to and from area hospitals. This
may include transporting participant gear to
hospital in cases where participant might need
to leave event. Occasionally might be called
upon to run other necessary errands. May use
personal vehicle as Taxi, with your own insurance.
SPECIALTY
TEAMS:
Medical: Comprised of a
variety of medical professionals, this team
provides all first-aid medical services to participants
in camp, and will provide emergency service
where necessary until local EMS/Paramedics arrive
on scene. Medical tent is staffed 24 hours each
day.
Chiropractic: Provides
chiropractic services as needed to participants
during the event. Only licensed chiropractors
should apply. Students will be permitted only
under approval of Chiropractic Team Manager
and Medical Team Sponsor.
Route Medical: Comprised
of members of the medical team, including EAK’s
and Paramedics, this team provides first aid
medical support along the route. Must be willing
to manage any emergency situations that arise,
until local emergency medical services arrive
on the scene.
ROAD BASED TEAMS:
Rest Stops: Manage set-up
and distribution of rest stop services including
food, snacks water and hydration. Manage bike
parking and traffic control at each location.
These teams leave early each morning and often
remain on route until late in the day before
returning to camp each night. Must be able to
lift 40+ lbs.
Water & Ice: Distribution
and replenishment of water and ice needed for
each of the Rest Stops. This team must also
pick-up of leftover water at the end of each
day, as needed. Team works closely with staff
to be certain that all rest stops have sufficient
hydration supplies each day. Must be able to
lift 50+ lbs and able to drive a 24’ truck.
Motorcycle Safety: Works
with staff and local law enforcement at specific
locations to guarantee safe passage for riders
during each day’s route. Moto Safety team
members will be staged along the route. Moto-Safety
team members must provide own motorcycle and
helmet, as well as complete insurance. Assist
at difficult intersections and other locations
as requested
Sweep: Travels the route
in vans outfitted with bike racks, providing
transportation to rest stops for cyclists who
need assistance or are unable to complete the
day’s route. This team leaves early in
the morning and arrives late into camp, after
all Riders have completed the route. Must be
able to lift 40 lbs.
Bus Liaisons: Communication
person for SAG bus as well as moral support
for those riders who require the use of the
SAG bus.
Bike Transport: Provide
transport of bikes back to camp for cyclists
unable to complete the day’s route. This
team will load bikes from rest stops and offload
bikes in the camp bike parking Area. Must be
able to lift 40+ lbs.
Route Marking Repair: Travel
in front of the cyclists checking the route
for any signage concerns. This team is responsible
for marking changes or additions that may happen
to the route after the advanced route marking
team has gone through.
Route Marking Removal: This
group follows behind the Caboose, picking up
all route marking signage, and organizing it
so that it can be redistributed back to the
advance route marking team.
Route Clean-Up: This team
is responsible for the pick-up of bagged trash
from each rest stop and taken to dumpsters provided
at lunch and in camp. Must be able to lift 50
lbs.
Caboose: The caboose follows
the last cyclist on each days route, offering
assistance where needed. Travels with a staff
person who provides contact to command team.
May use personal vehicle (to be used as Caboose)
with insurance.
Rest Stop Closure: Transports
rest stop closure staff along route to assigned
closure locations. Work with rest stop teams
to close rest stops according to schedule. May
use personal vehicle (to be used as Rest Stop
Closure vehicle) with insurance.
